Juxtapositions for the age of misinform-AI-tion.
The Speed of Reason Produces Warning Hallucin-AI-tions is an ongoing series of audio-visual collages. Each one draws on a different pair of news stories, published within the same 24 hours, through photographs, headlines and audio fragments gathered online, to create a number of provocative and bewildering juxtapositions.
The series was indirectly inspired by the rise of AI-generated content and generative AI's ability to make mistakes, creating erroneous outputs or, as they are technically know, 'hallucinations' More specifically, the project takes its cue from the hallucinations that Apple's AI feature made at the start of 2025 where it repeatedly made grave mistakes in its summaries of news headlines. Apple would go on to suspend the feature on 16th January 2025.
The title is a deliberate play on the title of Goya's famous print 'The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters', created between 1797 and 1799 and which is part of the satirical collection Los Caprichos.
